Whitesboro village in the town of Whitestown in the county of Oneida in the state of New York
A new chapter has begun. We have not yet reached a week in our new home, but I feel that I’m making much more progress unpacking in this house than I did when we moved to Syracuse. Although it is hard to see the progress with the house still in shambles, I know how many boxes have been tossed and the contents organized. Of course it helps that we didn’t move with a two week old baby this go around. 10 months is much more doable.
We have been adjusting quickly to our new life, schedule and neighborhood. Emilie has quickly learned to climb the stairs at record speeds. It’s so nice to see Tim before he leaves to work (the mornings I haven’t slept in from exhaustion) and it’s nice for the kids to see him before they go to bed each night.
Beau and Annie have made fast friends with our 3 year old neighbor Ava who is as curious and energetic as any 3 year old. They knock at her door at least twice a day to see if she’s free to play. Ava’s eyes light up with excitement every time she sees the kids. It seems to be a positive change for her to have friends next door. We live on a nice, quiet street. Except for the train horn every few minutes. But this mostly creates more excitement, because who doesn’t want to see a train?! I am grateful though that Tim’s and my room is downstairs. I lay down with Annie the other night and felt a very dizzying sensation each time a train rumbled by.
We are so happy that the library is not more than a ten minute walk from our house; and it is a fabulous library. We have already been a few times and even enjoyed a magic show the other day.
Our new ward has welcomed us with wide open arms. I already had 5 different women in the ward make sure to grab my number during church. We feel very much at home in this ward. The biggest difference is that it is much less transient and many more locals, especially among the young families - many of whom grew up in this ward or upstate NY. We were invited to dinner our first Sunday here (so grateful I didn’t have to cook one of the nights surrounded by boxes). On our drive to dinner we passed a man enjoying the company of some geese by the side of the highway. The things we see here never get old.
Two young men helped Tim unload the truck on Saturday. They were life savers! We purposely planned to load and unload the moving truck in the same day all on the hottest day of the year...
Due to our belief that we were going to move to Whitesboro two weeks ago, I had scheduled several of our Doctor and Dentist appointments during last week. Thus, we made the hour drive to Utica almost every day last week. The kids and I enjoyed our first of many anticipated days at the zoo. It is quaint and the kids absolutely loved it. Mommy loved the art museum - which is free! - and Beau and Annie especially enjoyed the creative room for children. It’s only a 3 minute drive from Tim’s work, so we expect to visit it regularly.
Beau is officially registered for kindergarten. Hooray! We cheer every time we drive past his new school. He is so eager to start. He will be riding the bus. How could he not, when New York State provides buses for every child in the public school system? Don’t worry if you live across the street from the school, it’s safer to board the bus and ride rather than walk. Why did the bus cross the street? To get to the other side of course.
True to New York fashion, we enjoyed a FREE lunch for the kids at the FREE pool in Rome (20 minutes from us).
We can’t wait to have our Syracuse home all cleaned out this weekend and move on from Syracuse, both literally and figuratively speaking.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore our little village of 3600 people and enjoy the amenities of Utica, New York.
Until next time.
Some of my favorite kid quotes this week:
A conversation with Annie the other night:
Annie: "Mom can you carry me? I think I can’t walk."
Mom: "You can’t walk?"
A: "Yep. My legs are too tired"
M: "Oh that’s too bad. Yes I can carry you"
A: "Ok. But I just can’t walk too much."
Annie playing with her toy phone:
"Hi daddy. I can’t wait for you to come home"
